Heartened by an experience last night: was at a local diner and overheard a very large group of people (group of about 20 aged 40s to 70+, none of whom appeared to be teachers) at the table beside us chatting over their meal and the topic govt-teacher impasse came up - to a person they seemed fed up with the govt attacks on teachers, the lack of funding, class composition being unrealistic, the many layoffs and school closures and really angered at the govt using their tax $ to avoid/appeal Supreme Court decisions and not obey the law, refusing to bargain properly with teachers for all this time and now planning to keep schools closed in the fall. So good to hear supportive comments about schools/teachers and awareness of govt attacks on education among general public...there IS support out there!! (That this occurred right after our non-educator dinner companion commented to me that she did not think there was really any support for teachers out there other than teachers talking to other teachers had me gritting my teeth, was doubly uplifting.)
