Heavenward by Scotty Smith A Prayer in Praise of the Ultimate Kingdom and True King Posted: 01 Oct 2013 03:32 AM PDT For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this. Isa. 9:6-7 Dear Lord Jesus, many of us begin today in confusion, anger, even disgust, about the state of our government in the United States. It’s in “shutdown” mode, whatever that’s supposed to mean. But cynicism on our part, yields no redemptive fruit; so we run to you today for perspective and centering, attitude adjustment and living hope. First and foremost, Jesus, we praise and adore for coming into the world to fulfill this great prophecy from Isaiah. There’s only one unshakable kingdom and one everlasting King. You are the King of kings and Lord of lords, to which we cry, “Hallelujah!”, many times over. Things are not as they appear. Through your life and death, resurrection and ascension, your kingdom has arrived and is at work to fulfill your promise of making all things new and putting all things right; of working “death in reverse” and “making everything sad untrue,” one Day. Though it will take your return to bring in the fullness of your kingdom, we have great motivation and resources to live by faith, not fear; with engagement, not withdrawal; through the love of the Spirit, not the spite of our dismay. May the gospel empower us for quick repentances, when are attitudes contradict grace; and humble boldness, to serve wherever you have placed us. So we pray for our government leaders today, just as you have commanded. Sovereignly, King Jesus, work in their hearts and deliberations; compel them to wise choices and care for each other; rule in and overrule the limitations of their perspectives and the gamesmanship of partisan politics. Lord Jesus, in the coming hours of this day and the days of this month, may we demonstrate a lot more gospel than gossip; a lot more intercession than criticism; a lot more agape than angst. So very Amen we pray, in your exalted and all powerful name.
