More changes to Facebooks News Feed Ranking Algorithm: starting in January 2015, organic posts with overly promotional content will get lower priority in the News Feed. Surely this is a good thing? Well, there are mixed opinions flying around, so far! Heres the scoop: Facebook surveyed hundreds of thousands of users and the consensus is people want to see more stories from friends and Pages they love... and less promotional content. Note: the overly promotional content people dont care for in their News Feed tends to be organic posts by Pages. Not ads. In other words, when Pages pay to amplify the reach and visibility of a specific piece of content, users are okay with that. Its obvious its an ad and weve come to expect something more commercial in nature, right? A well-targeted ad, for a product or service that you actually need, is a wonderful thing. According to the people surveyed, these are the traits that make organic posts feel too promotional: 1) Posts that solely push people to buy a product or install an app. 2) Posts that push people to enter promotions and sweepstakes with no real context. 3) Posts that reuse the exact same content from ads. Facebook says, Pages that post promotional creative should expect their organic distribution to fall significantly over time. News Feed is a competitive place! Every time a user logs on, they could see anywhere from 15,000 to 150,000 pieces of content - depending on how many friends they have, how many people they follow, and how many Pages theyve liked and follow. Out of that mass of content, Facebook passes each piece of it through the News Feed ranking algorithm - which contains as many as 100,000 weights - and then serves up around 300 stories in your News Feed. Amazing process, yes? Also, 75% of Facebook users access the platform via their mobile devices. So, given the increasing volume of content and the competition for a very small piece of real estate (smartphone screen), is it any wonder that Facebook is constantly wanting to only serve up high quality, relevant stories to each user? Keep in mind that new, even more granular controls are coming to News Feed - if you dont have them, theyre coming very soon! Pages still matter — a lot. They offer a free, easy-to-maintain online presence for people to discover and learn about a business. (Yes, and dont forget folks, ironically, Google SEO is an added benefit of maintaining an active Facebook business Page!) Many businesses also use Pages as a customer service channel. Businesses should think about their Page as a cornerstone of their online identity, not simply as a publishing service. This newest change will not increase the number of ads users see in their News Feed. Its about increasing relevance and quality. The majority of Pages will not be impacted by this change. Cool, yes?!
