Heavy rain, flash flooding possible this week JOHN WENDEL / NBC Charlotte CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A cloudy and wet weather pattern is expected for the Carolinas for the rest of the week with heavy flooding rain possible. Thursday’s showers and storms will move in from the southeast as Atlantic moisture spreads across the state. Scattered but heavy rain is likely as the storms move through. The main concern for flooding will come late Thursday night and Friday. This is when the computer models are forecasting the tropical weather disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico to move up into the area. As of now, the models are projecting more than an inch of rain for the Charlotte area, with as much as three inches possible in the mountains. Locally, heavy rain amounts of four to five inches could occur. With the ground already saturated, flash flooding is possible along with falling trees. Traveling anywhere in the southeast United States may be hampered for the next several days because of the heavy rain. The amount of rain will depend on the exact track of this weather system. Hurricane Hunter aircraft will be flying into this area of disturbed weather looking for a closed circulation of wind and high speeds. This afternoon the National Hurricane Center gave this area a 60 percent chance for developing into a tropical cyclone, and if it becomes a tropical storm, the name would be Andrea.
