Heiðrún Bergsdóttir It is for sure known that the Nordic nations in heathen times chanted or sang. They probably did it for recreation, for feasts, for ceremonies and for magic, etc. How those songs sounded is impossible to know for sure, but it is possible to get an idea of how they might have sounded like by looking into traditional music and chants in some areas of the north. Both in Faroe Islands and Iceland there survived a very vivid poetry and chanting culture, which was built on Norse mythology and hero poems tradition, until our day. A lot was preserved, in writing, recordings and the locals ressurrection of those traditions. It is obvious that the chantings are of Norse origin, since the tone scale in those chants is different from the ones on mainland Europe, and it is very obvious when you hear them how different they are. You can find recordings of those chantings online but it is difficult for people that cant read or write in the local languages to find them, so I have put some links with this post, for you to get a chance to hear how it really sounds. In my opinion I think it sounds awesome, like nothing else out there... but some think it sounds more like a sheep baaaing.
