Hello -- My name is Miguel Valdez. Today, Ive begun my first day as the new regional organizer for Gainesville and the surrounding areas. It is my responsibility to help gather the petition signatures needed so we can bring medical marijuana to a vote here in the state of Florida come November 2014. Its about 1:00 AM on Saturday, and for the past hour, Ive been scanning through and reading the profiles of people who signed up to volunteer for this campaign... people like Stephen. A father of two, Stephen takes pain killers for his three bulging discs; the pharmaceuticals tear his stomach to shreds. Then there was a woman out near Jacksonville involved in a car accident. Due to the prescription medications she takes, she suffers from chronic insomnia. She goes days without sleep. Even though cannabis has helped her before, shes afraid to acquire more due to the legal risks, and rightly so. Lastly, there was Max, who simply stated, I watched cancer kill my dad. While death comes for us all, did Maxs father suffer more than he needed to during his end-of-life stages? How could cannabis have helped? This is why medical marijuana needs to pass in Florida. And with your help, it will. Over the next few days, I will be contacting you by e-mail or by phone to activate you for our most important task, collecting ballot signatures. Only by getting 700,000 ballot signatures by February 2014 can we move forward. There is GREAT urgency in this for me, and I want that to be in your heart too, so that we can turn that urgency into action. If youre more than ready to be involved in the fight to bring medical marijuana to Florida, heres what I need from you: 1) Reply back to this e-mail and say, Im READY! (Get pumped!) 2) In your reply, tell me your availability: on a weekly basis, what days and what times are you available to gather petitions? 3) Tell me of any events in your area that you think we should attend to gather petitions. Is there a holiday-themed event coming up? What about farmers markets, art shows, football games (professional or college) or other sports? How about your local mall, or other events where crowds of people gather? Check your areas community calendars and send over those ideas! 4) Is there any skill you have that will be useful to this campaign? Do you know people in organizations whose stakeholders could benefit from medical cannabis in their lives? (Think of HIV/AIDS, cancer, epilepsy, veterans, other support groups!) How about someone you know that works in nursing homes or assisted living? 5) Lastly, share with me a little something about yourself. Please message me back to let me know this information. Being a graduate of the University of Florida, it is really, REALLY good to be back in Gainesville to bring my abilities to this fight! Before returning back in September, I spent the past 3 years involved in Colorados medical marijuana community. I helped build a non-profit organization that assisted indigent patients, disabled veterans, and hospice patients with the cost of medical cannabis. I listened to their stories, and I learned that a patient should have the right to choose a safer alternative to pharmaceuticals. Im fortunate to call researchers, pioneers, compassionate business owners, and other amazing advocates across Colorado, and the country, my friends and peers. Simply put, this issue is a no-brainer for me. If you have not already signed up as a volunteer, there is still time! Here is the link to update your information. If you need anything from me, call or text me at my number (720-443-2379) any time of the day. I look forward to working with you all to make a better community here in Florida!
