Hello Everyone! As some of you will have seen there have been some conversations going on over the last few months about the possibility of developing a Youth High Level Panel. For those of you that don’t know (or for those of you that do but need a reminder!), on the 18th of July, members of the UN Secretary Generals High Level Panel of Eminent Persons on the Post-2015 Development Agenda, Tawakkol Karman and John Podesta, held a meeting entitled “ Youth and the Post-2015 Development Agenda (Preview) ” with Youth Representatives from Asia, Africa and Latin America. During the meeting, some of the people involved on the call proposed the establishment of a Youth High Level Panel (YHLP), to continue involving their perspectives, play an integral role in forming consensus on youth issues, and advancing the role young people must play in accountability and governance in the implementation of the Post-2015 framework. On International Youth Day, Tawakkol Karman and John Podesta became YHLP Champions by endorsing this proposal and by writing an open letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon calling on him to form a Youth High Level Panel on Post-2015. Whilst in New York for the UN General Assembly, representatives of the UN Major Group of Children and Youth and the Beyond 2015 Children and Youth working group met with John Podesta to discuss this in more detail. During the pre-meet and meeting itself lots of different views were raised about the issue of a YHLP and more broadly what is the best way that young people can continue to have their voices heard in the post 2015 process. Naturally lots of people had lots of different views and ideas so I have attached the notes for the pre-meeting so you can get a better idea of these different views. It was decided that the youth constituency would go away and discuss whether the idea of the YHLP – or a broader ‘youth panel’ – is something that we feel is a good idea and if so develop more concrete proposals around this concept including objectives, activities, and outputs and go back to John Podesta once we have these details. SO… we thought it best to run a consultation to get everybody’s ideas on what they would like to see happen over the next few years in terms of opportunities for you all to be involved in the post-2015 process. We have put together some short questions on the World We Want website to help us all guide our thinking about the most effective ways for children and youth to participate in the post 2015 process and what this would involve. These will stay online until 6th November and following this we will send around a report of all the different perspectives and ask for people to nominate themselves to pull all the different ideas into a report summarising what you have all suggested. We will all then be in a much better position to plan our engagement in the next steps! Please note – this is not a consultation on what it is you want to see in the goals but how we should as a coalition be involved in the different stages and what that practically looks like – whether it’s a Youth High Level Panel or something completely different that hasn’t been suggested yet! We need to be thinking about children and youths role in every stage of the process including the design of the goals, how they are implemented, and how they are monitored. This is such an important time for us all to be heard about the world we want and were really looking forward to hearing how you think that should happen and then working together to make it happen! Thanks, Amelia and Hannah
