Hello Everyone, Mom and I havent been home long. We had to come - TopicsExpress

Hello Everyone, Mom and I havent been home long. We had to come home and get more clothes, pay bills and I mowed the grass etc.. Dad was alert today, its the first time since he has been in the hospital. We felt he is in good hands tonight and the nurse on duty is from our neck of the woods. We are heading back in the morning to Kingsport. The first two days we were in a motel and I was fortunate to get a hospitality room in the hospital. So we are not far from him. He is in respiratory failure. He keeps producing too many secretions and its gagging him. It is actually keeping him from eating. He cant even drink water. We swab his mouth with a wet sponge. He also is in kidney failure. His creatine is 4.3 this morning and Tuesday it had got up to 4.8. His BUN level is also too high. Monday and Tuesday they had him on two IVs of blood pressure meds trying to elevate it. It had fallen as low as 89/28. As of today, he has been winged off of those meds. Since his blood pressure improved, his kidney function has improved. He is putting out urine now but not as much as the doctor would like. His kidney doctor said he was on the borderline of getting over the hump for his kidneys to work. But, he is also on the borderline of needing dialysis. Last night his nurse said he got tickled at him. He wasnt feeling good but he heard 50s music. Opened up one eye at the T.V. and started doing the swim with his hands. Ha! Mom just called to check on him and his nurse said he was in a good mood. Mom and I are upset with a few things that have happened. They have tried 3 times to put a pic line in dads arm without success. The third time they even took him to radiology to get it aligned correctly. Its in his arm and it doesnt function. His doctor wanted a speech therapist to evaluate dad to see if he could eat. He has eaten whatever he has wanted for a long time. She doesnt have a good bed side manner. A little snooty. She thinks dads throat isnt strong enough that he needs to go back into therapy. That means a nose tube, then a feeding tube then starting all over from puree to real food again. I wish you could have seen his eyes when she told him that. Mom and I know dad. Its just that he is full of fluid and secretions. Once that disappears he can breathe to be able to swallow. We are hanging tuff on that one. We requested a second opinion and an actual swallowing test that views which way his food is going. Dad motioned his fingers like he was typing. He wanted me to tell his friends that he was okay. He has been through it. He has a Lung, Kidney and Infectious Doctor. He is on 3 different antibiotics. Thats to keep septic shock at bay and to help his lungs from getting pneumonia. Love and Prayers to All.
