Hello Friends, Please see below for an update from Council President Todd Gloria regarding the proposed Target Express project at Fern St. and Grape St. Please spread to your neighbors. Dear Neighbors, After learning last week of Target’s plans to open a Target Express store at the site of the former Gala Foods in South Park, my staff was able to have initial conversations with Target representatives to learn more about the proposal and share the concerns and suggestions we have received from the community. From what I have learned, I can provide the following update: • Target plans to keep the building to its current 18,000 sq. ft. footprint and will be making tenant improvements to the interior of the building. They will retain all of the mid-century storefront features and expect the signage to be consistent with that used by both Gala and Safeway, with floating letters across the front of the store. • The Target Express will contain a pharmacy and groceries, along with health and beauty supplies and some electronics. They are looking into any additional features, such as a banking center, that could be added to benefit their customers. • Because it is not a change of use, Target will not being required to make any changes or improvements to the intersection at Grape and Fern. However, I have asked City traffic engineers to analyze the intersection and provide options for any necessary improvements. • Target expects to keep the parking lot businesses such as the food truck, coffee kiosk and recycling center. Since this is not a regular model for the company, the template will not mirror the standard company format, and they will be incorporating some creative elements within the store. I have asked that they reach out to the community and provide additional information about the project. As this process moves forward I will continue to engage with Target to ensure that the community’s voice is heard. As always, thank you for the opportunity to serve. TODD Sincerely, Adrian Granda Council Representative Council President Todd Gloria, Third Council District (619)236-6633 202 C Street, 10th Floor San Diego, CA 92101
