Hello, Here is what I did for my weekly activity. Since the majority of my friends on Fackbook are working in either environmental protection or sustainable development fields, I sent the survey to my WeChat friends, who are living in China. I received totally 24 responses, including the response from myself. I am in the “Alarmed” group. Here below is the result I have according to the responses. Alarmed: 17% (4) - Concerned: 54% (13) - Cautious:17% (4) - Disengaged:8% (2) - Doubtful:4% (1) -Dismissive: 0% In one of the responses, my friend explained that he should be in “Alarmed” group couple years ago, but now he was in “concerned” group. He also predicted that he would be in “Disengaged” group if he did the survey a few years later. The reason he gave me is that he was getting older, but the environmental situation had never been changed. I also asked the three people whose response fell into “Disengaged” and”Doubtful”. The reasons they gave me are very interesting. One said that she just felt more and more hot in summer but it was not a big deal. Another one said that this was a huge issue and we should leave it to the government and the tycoons. The one who is in “Doubtful” group quite certainly told me that he heard information about both warm winter and cold winter. He believed that the self adjusting ability of nature was very strong. It can be seen from their answers that their knowledge about global warming is incomplete or none. After I received the responses, I actually went to the IPCC Chinese website and wanted to find reports in Chinese to share with them, but I did not. I was disappointed. I felt that their right to be informed has been deprived of just because they dont read English. I am not sure if I can say that the Chinese government and scientists do not actively communicate with the public about global warming. Using the language that professor Somerville recommended when communicating with the public about global warming, if scientists can use the massive media and social network to inform the public, including free speeches to the public, the public awareness of global warming will be more and wider. In addition, using a variety of language to communicate is also necessary. Good night Xiaolan
