Hello, The Calgary-Shaw office has seen an overwhelming response of support and volunteerism over the last week. Thank you so much for being a part of the much needed response we have been able to offer. Many people continue to ask ‘how can I help?’ Thank you, all. DONATIONS: Over the last week the office has collected and distributed well over 70 truck-loads of donated goods (we had to stop counting!) to much needed First Nations communities and various Calgary non-profit associations. Many communities still require donations so we will continue to accept donations and deliver them to the highest-need areas, saving some items for communities that will soon be able to accept items such as near by First Nations reserves and our neighbors in High River. If you can deliver items with your vehicle please let someone in the office know and we will load you up! The office will be open from 9am to 4pm every day with exception of July 1st and July 5th . The office is located at Bay328 – 22 Midlake Boulevard SE Calgary. CLEANING FLOOD AFFECTED HOUSES: Right now we are finding our support in Calgary to be most needed cleaning up homes and communities in the flood affected areas. Many of us will be heading to Mission on Saturday June 29th and 30th. By pooling our efforts towards cleaning houses and impacted communities we can help relieve the devastation they are facing. My wife and I had the profound honour of meeting and working with a family in Rideau today as we sifted through their mud-soaked items and cleared their basement. It was rewarding, humbling, and in ways, rejuvenating as we were able to witness a sense of overwhelming concern be lifted off their shoulders by the end of the day. I was also able to lend a hand in removing a very large pile of rubble consisting mainly of wet drywall and a group of us were able to complete a job that the onsite city workers suggested would have taken days without our help. We welcome anyone who has time and ability to meet us tomorrow morning (Saturday, June 29th) at the Mission volunteer muster point located at 3030 4th St SW. We recommend you park on 4th St, between 30th Ave and 34th Ave SW (parallel to Mission Road). Look for a gentleman named Stan wearing a safety vest and let him know you are available to volunteer. Volunteers will be grouped to go to houses that need immediate support. Stay tuned to learn where and when we will meet on Sunday. For those wondering what to expect: - Expect to get very muddy! - There are work gloves and masks there but if you have access to some, please bring your own. - There are jobs for those that can lift many loads and those that can wipe down muddy items. My wife has a bad back and found a job that suited her well. - There is a lot of food and water present as well as port-a-potties. (If you have a specific diet, we recommend you bring your own food). - There is a lot of need for our manual labour and an enormous amount of appreciation from the communities. We recommend volunteers ALWAYS wear a mask. When returning to your car, be sure to have garbage bags there to place dirty clothes and boots in with clean options to change into. We also recommend bringing towels to sit on for the ride. Insect repellant may be around but bringing your own is suggested. Thank you again. Please forward this along to those that can respond with us. Sincerely, Jeff Wilson MLA Calgary-Shaw
