He had a sister, Juana, born in 1581 When his mother could not support him and his sister, Saint Martin was confided to a primary school for two years, then placed with a surgeon to learn the medical arts. This caused Saint Martín de Porres great joy, though he was only ten years old, for he could exercise charity to his neighbor while earning his living He spent part of his youth with a surgeon-barber where he learned some medicine and how to care for the sick. Already He was spending hours of the night in prayer, a practice which increased rather than diminished as he grew older Saint Martín grew up in poverty. He is also known as ‘Martin of Charity’ He is popularly called the ‘Saint of the Broom’ At the age of 15, he was taken in by the Dominicans as a servant boy. His duties grew and he was promoted to Almoner, and then put in charge of the infirmary He was put in charge of the Dominicans infirmary. He asked for admission to the ‘Dominican Convent of the Rosary’ in Lima and was received first as a tertiary. When Saint Martin was 24, he was given the habit of a Coadjutor Brother and assigned to the infirmary of that convent He was known for his care of the sick and for his spectacular miraculous cures. Martin was working also with the sick, outside his convent, often bringing them healing with only a simple glass of water. His work on behalf of the poor was tireless His superiors dropped the stipulation that no black person may be received to the holy habit or profession of our order. Saint Martín de Porres took vows as a Dominican brother He was a friend of Saint John de Massias and Saint Rose of Lima He solicited (begged) more than $2,000 a week from the rich to support the poor and sick of Lima. He established an orphanage and childrens hospital for the poor children of the areas slums. Saint Martín even set up a shelter for the stray cats and dogs and nursed them back to health. Until his death, Saint Martín de Porres would flagellate himself three times every night, for his own failings and for the conversion of pagans and sinners. Martín lived in self-imposed austerity. He never ate meat He fasted continuously He spent much time in prayer and meditation. He had many miracles attributed to him Saint Martín de Porres is listed among the “Levitating Saints” He had the miracle of levitation (process by which an object is suspended against gravity, in a stable position, without physical contact). Other Saints who also experienced “miracle of levitation” were Saint Francis Xavier, Saint Joseph of Cupertino, Saint Antonio Galvão , Saint Alphonsus Liguori, Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Thomas Aquinas, Saint John Bosco , Saint Teresa of Avila, Saint Philip Neri, Saint Ignatius Loyola, .. amongst others.. ----------------------------------------- Like Saint Anthony of Padua, Saint Martin de Porres is also attributed to obtaining the miracle of bilocation (ability to be located in two distinct places at the same instant in time) Saint Martin also had the miracle of instantaneous cures Like Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Martin also had an ability to communicate with animals Martin had great devotion to the Holy Eucharist. He was deeply attached to the Blessed Sacrament, and according to a biography of him in The Saint Martin De Porres Prayer Book he was praying in front of it one night when the step of the altar he was kneeling on caught fire. He remained where he was; unaware of what was happening around him ----------------------------------- Saint Martin the Porres is the first Black saint in the Americas He died November 3, 1639 (aged 59), in Lima, Peru He died of fever in 1639. Martin was venerated from the day of his death Letters to Rome pleaded for his beatification; the decree affirming the heroism of his virtues was issued in 1763 by Pope Clement XIII (who was the 248th Bishop of Rome since the pontificate of Saint Peter the Apostle) After his death, the miracles and graces received when he was invoked multiplied in such profusion that his body was exhumed after 25 years His body after 25 years was found intact, and exhaling a fine fragrance. Saint Martin de Porres was beatified in 1837 by Pope Gregory XVI (who was the 254th Vicar of Christ since the pontificate of Saint Peter the Apostle) He was canonized on the 6th of May, 1962 by Pope John XXIII (who was the 261st Servant of God since the pontificate of Saint Peter the Apostle) -------------------------------------------------------------- Litany of Saint Martin de Porres Lord, have mercy.
