In the year 1587 the celebration was moved to the 17th of September by Pope Sixtus V (who was the 227th Vicar of Christ since the pontificate of Saint Peter the Apostle) In 1622 the celebration was extended to the Archdiocese of Toledo by Pope Gregory XV (who was the 234th Servant of God since the pontificate of Saint Peter the Apostle) In 1666 the Discalced Carmelites received the faculty to recite the Office of the Name of Mary four times a year In the year 1671 the Feast of the Holy Name of Mary was extended to the whole Kingdom of Spain. --------------------------------------------- Before the Battle of Vienna in 1683, King John III Sobieski placed his troops under the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the following year, to celebrate the victory, Pope Blessed Innocent XI inserted the Feast of the Holy Name of Mary in the General Roman Calendar, assigning to it the Sunday within the octave of the Nativity of Mary which fall between (8th -15th of September). The liturgy of the Sundays, which previously had been generally replaced by celebrations of Saints, was restored to prominence in the reform of Pope Saint Pius X (who was the 257th Vicar of Christ since the pontificate of Saint Peter the Apostle) The celebration of the “Holy Name of Mary” was therefore moved to 12th of September Later in the same century, the Feast was removed from the General Roman Calendar in 1969, as something of a duplication of the 8th of September Feast of the “Nativity or Birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary”. But it did not cease to be a recognized Feast of the Roman Rite, being mentioned in the Roman Martyrology on the 12th of September. The year 2002 typical edition of the Roman Missal restored the celebration to the General Roman Calendar, during the Pontificate of Pope Saint John Paul II (who was the 264th Servant of God since the pontificate of Saint Peter the Apostle). ----------------------------------------------------- Quote of the Day Mary is the sure way to go to Jesus and to find Him perfectly. It is through her that holy souls, who are to radiate holiness, must find Jesus. -Saint Louis Maria de Montfort. ------------------------------------------------------ Let us pray O Mary, you lead us unfailingly to Jesus. Help us to follow your inspirations in all things and to radiate your Divine Son to the whole world. This we ask through your Divine Son our Lord Jesus Christ Who lives and reigns with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit one God forever and ever. We pray thee, good Mother, may it please thee to comfort us in all our anxieties and both corporal and spiritual necessities. Lead us upon all our ways and in all our actions guide thou and protect us, for we, poor creatures, are much in need of thy protection. Shield our body and our soul against all evils and dangers, and let us partake of thy virtues on earth and of thy riches in heaven. Amen. O Purest of Virgins, most fruitful vine, Splendour of Heaven, Holy and singular, who brought forth the Son of God, still ever remaining a Pure Virgin, assist us in our necessities.
