Happy feast day to all named Mary and parents of all named Mary Happy feast day to especially to all who sing Hymns to our Lady and recite the Holy Rosary in Her Honour with true devotion Happy feast day to all members of the Legion of Mary Society and all Marian devotees Happy feast day to all Catholics and all children of Mary Happy feast day to all Catholic Missionaries Today (September 12) marks the Feast of the Holy Name of Mary It can also be referred to as The Feast of “The Holy Name of the Blessed Virgin Mary” The Holy Name of Mary is a feast day in the Roman Catholic Church celebrated on the 12th September every year to honour the Most Holy Name of Mary the Virgin Mother of Jesus To commemorate the victory at the Battle of Vienna in 1683 the Feast was included in the General Roman Calendar by Pope Blessed Innocent XI (who was the 240th Bishop of Rome since the pontificate of Saint Peter the Apostle) It has been a Universal Roman Rite Feast since 1684 The Feast of the Most Holy Name of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is a day on which the inexpressible love of the Mother of God for her Holy Child is recalled, and the eyes of the Catholic faithful are directed to the figure of the Mother of the Redeemer, for them to invoke with devotion The feast day began in the year 1513 as a local celebration in Cuenca, Spain, celebrated on the 15th of September. In the year 1587 the celebration was moved to the 17th of September by Pope Sixtus V (who was the 227th Vicar of Christ since the pontificate of Saint Peter the Apostle) In 1622 the celebration was extended to the Archdiocese of Toledo by Pope Gregory XV (who was the 234th Servant of God since the pontificate of Saint Peter the Apostle) In 1666 the Discalced Carmelites received the faculty to recite the Office of the Name of Mary four times a year In the year 1671 the Feast of the Holy Name of Mary was extended to the whole Kingdom of Spain. --------------------------------------------- Before the Battle of Vienna in 1683, King John III Sobieski placed his troops under the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the following year, to celebrate the victory, Pope Blessed Innocent XI inserted the Feast of the Holy Name of Mary in the General Roman Calendar, assigning to it the Sunday within the octave of the Nativity of Mary which fall between (8th -15th of September). The liturgy of the Sundays, which previously had been generally replaced by celebrations of Saints, was restored to prominence in the reform of Pope Saint Pius X (who was the 257th Vicar of Christ since the pontificate of Saint Peter the Apostle) The celebration of the “Holy Name of Mary” was therefore moved to 12th of September Later in the same century, the Feast was removed from the General Roman Calendar in 1969, as something of a duplication of the 8th of September Feast of the “Nativity or Birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary”. But it did not cease to be a recognized Feast of the Roman Rite, being mentioned in the Roman Martyrology on the 12th of September. The year 2002 typical edition of the Roman Missal restored the celebration to the General Roman Calendar, during the Pontificate of Pope Saint John Paul II (who was the 264th Servant of God since the pontificate of Saint Peter the Apostle). ----------------------------------------------------- Quote of the Day Mary is the sure way to go to Jesus and to find Him perfectly.
