Hello all, Joel here. I recently got a chance to attend the World - TopicsExpress

Hello all, Joel here. I recently got a chance to attend the World Peace event at the SPC Seminole campus and I can wholeheartedly say that it was empowering to hear what the speakers had to share. I learned about Seed of Peace; an organization that’s founded on bringing youths from all walks of life together in a safe open dialogue setting that helps each party better identify with what another races daily life is like. Later through the open discussion panel of Randy Lightfoot, Sane Haidara, Dustin Lemke and moderator Roy Slater the audience and I were able to get a better understanding of just how important and how difficult peace can be to attain as a global necessity. Learning about the global consequences for letting conflict go unchecked from the perspective of 60’s revolutionaries and war refugees alike was eye opening. Similarly, some of the questions answered had such bold results. For example, when (the panel was) asked: “Why do you believe there is so much conflict?” Some of the responses included: “Disregard of respect for human dignity results in violence.” “The common denominator is a challenge for social and equal rights” When asked if it was the responsibility of the United States to step in and intervene in instances such as Mali the panel also responded with insight such as: “What happens somewhere else greatly affects what will happen to you” “The United States has always been in a dominant position to come to the aid of another country and globally, the rest of the world has come to accept this. However, they’re other great countries that can also step in to provide aid. It doesn’t always have to be the U.S., to think globally is to act globally. Personally, one of the things that stuck with me the most was the message that peace must be attained locally. If you can have peaceful communities, you can then have peaceful towns, peaceful towns lead to peaceful cities and so forth. Lastly, I’ll end this post with two great quotes from Sane Haidara: “Working for any cause of justice is working towards all causes of justice” and… “Make the communities problems your problems, so that the communities happiness can be our happiness” Resources for World Peace Advocacy: Seed of Peace National Peace Corps Association Institution for Inclusive Security Antiwar Veterans for Peace Fellowship of Reconciliation Stop the War Collation Peace Action Pennies for Peace (P4P)
