Hello everyone! Here is another great article from Lindsay on GMO. Enjoy! How to Avoid GMO foods Genetically modified foods are all around us and in almost every supermarket out there. In my last article I discussed the potential risks associated with genetically modified foods and today I want to help give you the tools to avoid them if you choose to. It can be rough and rather overwhelming navigating the grocery store in an attempt to eat a healthy whole food diet. However, it can become even more overwhelming when you throw GMO foods into the mix. A great place to start is by becoming aware of some of your top genetically modified foods. Knowing so helps us stay on the look out and make wiser choices when we hit our local supermarket. The top 3 genetically modified foods are corn, soy and cotton seed. These often wind up in processed foods or supplements as fillers and stabilizers. So it stands to reason if we avoid processed foods altogether and make informed supplement purchases through reputable and pharmaceutical grade companies; we should be able to avoid these types of foods altogether. Though these are the top 3 genetically modified crops, it does not mean that they are the only ones. Unfortunately, genetically modified foods do not require a label, and without a labeling system for GMO foods, the only way we can assure we are avoiding them is to do the following: Buy Organic whenever possible! If we are buying organic produce we know that we are avoiding the risk of consuming GMO foods. If you are buying processed organic foods you have to be a bit cautious as an organic food product can be labeled organic as long as 80% of the ingredients listed are in fact organic. This unfortunately leaves room for potential GMO foods to sneak into our products, so try to keep a whole food diet instead and get used to making things from scratch. Dont worry it does not have to be hard and it is fun and extremely rewarding. Lastly, a great way to ensure your produce is Organic when buying it from the supermarket is by checking your produce codes. If the item contains a five digit code listing ‘9’ as the first number; you can rest assured that it is Organic. *Lindsay*
