Hello everyone, been a busy but fun week. Hope you are all well and see you soon x ##UPDATES #Deptford Last Friday was the first of the Deptford High Street walks. Over 40 pupils from our Lewisham schools, together with our police and council took a message of peace and hope in the community - photo attached. #Sainsburys On Sunday we supported The Jimmy Mizen Foundation at Sainsburys in Lee, they have been adopted as the local charity of the year. We collected handprints from over 220 people - photo attached. #Buckingham Palace Then on Thursday, again with The Jimmy Mizen Foundation, we visited Buckingham Palace to take part in Prince Charles launch of ‘Step Up To Serve’ the foundation has been identified by the Prince as an example of best practice. Photos attached. Link to the BBC article - bbc.co.uk/news/uk-25019567 #Number 10 At the event at Buckingham Palace Camilla Yahaya, one of the young leaders of the 10,000 Hands, met and spoke with Prince Charles, David Cameron, Nick Clegg and Ed Miliband. As you will know we have been waiting on a date for our December visit, with all the schools. Camilla politely nudged things in the right direction on Thursday and I had an email on Friday saying we would have confirmation this week. #Helicopter When we have the date for Downing St we will confirm with London MET (Air Support Unit), the date we would like them to fly over, the ASU has been very supportive and helpful. The helicopter flyover of Lewisham, visiting each school and filming and photographing the pupils ‘forming’ one the letters of our message ‘Lewisham for Peace’, would ideally happen in the week we visit Downing St. There is quite a bit of media interest. We are going to ask schools to get as many pupils outside as possible, a year group, maybe even KS3, (I would imagine interruption to KS4 will be avoided). The event would take 40 minutes to an hour. ##UPCOMING This Friday 29th November - 10,000 Hands Buses Conference with Sedgehill, Mayor, Police - 2pm to 3.30pm The first Happier Buses meeting is going to be on the 29th, at Sedgehill School, who are the school who will run the pilot scheme with the 181. All schools are welcome to take part, although I recognise that you will not be able to attend every event. The meeting will see various user groups and the drivers meeting for an initial - ‘let’s all get to know each other and build a sense of….. This is ours - our community, our bus, our driver, our passengers’. The hope is to challenge behaviors, expectations of the everyone, including the young people. Longer term we would like to launch the schools adopt their bus with Boris having breakfast and riding one of the buses on the morning school route with the bus ambassadors. As always thanks to Ms Sulke for the initial idea and her continued support. ##Tuesday 3rd December - The House of Lords to welcome the 10,000 Hands Cloth. 12 to 3pm Two pupils in total to represent the 10,000 Hands. ##Friday 6th Deptford High Street 10,000 Hands Safe Haven walk TWO. 2pm to 4pm same pupils and schools as for walk ONE. ##Week beginning Mon 9th, Dec Helicopter & Downing St (this is a working date). ##March 2014 European visit to Prague - 6 pupils from the 10,000 Hands schools & the Young Mayors Team ##Summer 2014 European visit to Berlin & Paris - 8 pupils from the 10,000 Hands schools & the Young Mayors Team ##October 2014 Visit to South Africa to take part in Desmond Tutu International Peace Conference. NB. There will be no cost for the schools or pupils for these visits. School/pupil involvement and engagement with the 10,000 Hands will be the determining factor for involvement in the visits. MORE DETAIL - Deptford High Street 40 Pupils from Deptford Green, Addey and Stanhope, St Matthews, Forest Hill, PLFC, Trinity and St Dunstans joined the Police and Community Support Offices, Two Pupil Ambassadors, Lewisham Community Safety teams, Second Wave, and Martin Grover LBBAC. This is the first of three walks before January. We made some of noise, announced our hopes and handed out flyers - attached. The young people also identified the 10 shops they felt would make good ‘partners’ for our project. It was fun and happy & we all gathered for a group photo and to shout that we loved Deptford. I have received 36 phone calls and messages of interest and support since the walk, the school teams identified over 15 shops that would be good homes for the campaign. The second walk on the 6th of December will see the pupils revisiting the shops they chose to spend a bit more time with them, build a relationship and ask them if they would like to be part of the project and become a 10,000 shop. The third walk see us formally ‘adopt’ our shops and launch. The Deptford project hopes to bring us all together, building friendships and community, led by the young people of Deptford but involving everyone. Deptford, Lewisham Together for Peace, Hope and Change. “Hope in our young people, peace on our streets and positive change in our communities.”
