Hello everyone - TopicsExpress

Hello everyone I am just emailing you to make sure you are still on track with Unit 5 and to remind you what the research part is all about. For E7 you have to collect together (collate) a range of pieces of research (articles, web pages, chapters from books, references, quotes etc), which have helped you to find out about 1 relevant piece of research (see Moodle page Unit 5 for examples) and 1 current initiative (again look at Moodle). Ideally the research and initiative that you consider will link together, however if they don’t it doesn’t matter. The main idea is to demonstrate that you can choose an issue linked to Early Years practice and conduct small scale research to find out more about it and collect together a range of sources to help you show me the path your discovery has taken. You might start with a plan of your ideas and annotate it to show me how you made your final decision about what to look at and then organise your research material into a logical order – again each piece should be annotated so I have some ideas as to why you feel it is important and relevant. B1 – Evaluate how the recent initiative supports practice within the early years setting – so look at your research on the recent INITIATIVE and discuss, explain, describe how it supports practitioners to work with children in an early years setting. Example: your initiative may be Jamie’s 5 a day. You would then tell me how this supports practitioners to: offer children health choices, educate children and families about healthy lifestyles, encourage children to try new foods, embed EDI through choices and use of language, consider differentiation including every child, take account of individual needs and family wishes, develop policy to support healthy eating, plan an appropriate diet and rota of snacks and meals, include children in preparation of food, influence snack time (rolling snack, snack groups, designated snack time – socialisation activity for children, sharing, being together, manners, communication), gardening (growing their own) etc. You will finish this criteria with a clear evaluation – tell me what you think works, what you think doesn’t work, what changes you would/could make and why (always tell me why – this is the important bit!) and then draw together a final conclusion (remember the reflective cycle here it will help you – describe, evaluate, analyse, conclude, action plan). Your collated material (E7) will show me where you have drawn your ideas from and will indicate how informed you are – the more collated material the more depth there will be to your findings and the level of knowledge you apply to B1. A1 – Evaluate how the current research can support practitioners professional practice – so look at your research on the current RESEARCH and discuss, explain, describe how it supports professionalism in practitioners (how does it make us better, what impact will it have on what we do?) Example: If you have looked at the changes in Early Years qualifications you might detail how they have changed – possibly through a time line which demonstrates the historical changes from say the 1970’s to the present day. You would then consider why these changes have happened and what impact they had on children and professional practice. Consider it like this – qualifications to work in child care were scarce, generally the most prestigious qualification was the NNEB – nursery nurses with this qualification were sought after worldwide and English trained and qualified NNEB’s were thought to be the crème de la crème (the best of the best). Princess Diana was NNEB qualified! During the 1970’s and 1980’s to become a registered childminder or nursery practitioner (not level 3 NNEB) you only needed to attend a 3 hour social services training event – there was no test you just had to attend – now 20 years on we have qualifications of all levels (1 – 7 and beyond) and in a variety of different topics. Why have these changes happened, what happened in the UK to force changes, was it political, was it due to child protection issues, were children being mistreated, were other things happening such as more women needing to go to work? You will evaluate your findings, draw your own conclusions, back everything up with a link to your research or a quote and link your work back to what difference the changes make to child care practitioners as professionals. Your collated material (E7) will show me where you have drawn your ideas from and will indicate how informed you are – the more collated material the more depth there will be to your findings and the level of knowledge you apply to A1. I know there is lots to consider and obviously there will be a negotiation with Ellen about the hand-in date for this work but I do expect you to have completed everything except the E7, B1 and A1. E7, B1 and A1 should be in progress with evidence for me to see and ideas for us to discuss. Good luck everyone☺️
