Hello family and friends, Today is a bittersweet day. For starters, we’re going home to see all of our friends and family, which is great! On the other hand, we are leaving the beautiful island of Puerto Rico. Before we left for this trip I did not know anybody, and now at the end of this two-week experience I am going home with some of the best people I can now call friends. I could not have asked for two better professors or a better group of twenty people with whom to experience Puerto Rico. I am truly going to miss waking up to smiling faces and messy hair. This trip had its ups and downs, as any long-term experience might. Yes, sometimes things weren’t 100% perfect and people weren’t always happy BUT we all pushed each other through it and came out smiling. The stories about the memories and laughs this group has shared could be told for days! I am going to miss the sound of the waves crashing against the shore, the coqui’s (tiny, native Puerto Rican frog) mating call, the laughs we’ve shared, and the smell of the fresh native food on the streets. For me, there were two major highlights on this trip. The first was the bioluminescent bay—I almost tipped the kayak over reaching my arm into the water. The microorganisms glowing made me feel like a kid in a candy shop. I was so happy that night. The second best part of this trip was yesterday’s event. We witnessed humpback whales swimming, and watched one of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen. I am having a hard time writing about this trip without crying because it was one of the best things that could have happened to me. I was forced out of my comfort zone and it turned out to be worth it. Having no cell phone was difficult, but I am so happy that I didn’t have it because it would have caused a wedge between my classmates, the culture, and me. We are all so excited to see our families and friends, and hopefully we are bringing home some of this warm weather! Love you all, --Abbey Prellberg
