Hello fellow animators! Due to requests from various people (cough) FALK (cough) Ive been asked to give a review of a product called the Yiynova MSP19U+ tablet. I recently purchased this economical Cintiq alternative and have been pretty impressed. As a recently graduated animation student, I can look back and fondly (and at times not so fondly) remember sitting in 213 animating on the Cintiqs, pen clutched in my hand, wishing there were a way to finish my assignments at home. The main reason this dream wasnt actualized was because CINTIQS ARE EXPENSIVE. As someone who didnt have 2k to drop for the hardware, I was stuck trucking to school and working in the the animation lab. Here is where the Yiynova MSP19U+ comes into play. As a tablet monitor, it comes in at a low $620, and that is what piqued my interest. After scouring the internet for reviews (the majority extremely positive), I took a shot and purchased the tablet on Amazon and waited. It came in a day early than expected. I was required to purchase a Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter for my Macbook Pro, but otherwise every thing that I needed came in the box. The tablet requires a usb port, a VGA port, and a wall socket. The screen is a shiny glass LCD display, unlike the Cintiq which is more of a paper feel. Its not a bad thing, and honestly I like the crisper, brighter colors. Its not to hard to get use to, but it can be fingerprint magnet. At 19,” 1440x900, it is in the same size range as the Cintiqs at school (if not bigger). Perhaps the only issue I have come across is the amount of pixels the screen has, at 89.37 PPI, it tends to pixelate small text, but Im comparing it to my Macbook Pros display so its only glaring there. The colors are slightly off out of the box, but thats up to you to go in and finesse the color settings and calibrate it. Ive just noticed that it tends to make everything brighter, and slightly cooler than expected. It has great pressure sensitivity, and the controls on the side of the product are helpful, though I dont particularly use them. The pen you use requires an AAA battery to use it, but it doesnt weigh it down too much. I actually like the weight of the pen better than a Wacom pen primarily because I feel that Wacom pens are very top heavy. If you like to hold the stem like I do, you tend to drop them frequently. This, not an issue with this pen. Ive used the tablet in Photoshop CS6, Toon Boom, and Manga Studio 5 (another product I recommend highly for the up and coming digital artist!) with amazing results. All and all an awesome buy at a great price. I know that $620 is a lot of money (I agonized over this purchase myself) but compared to the $2,500 alternative it cant be beat.
