Hello fellow psychedelic light show folk. Am presenting an installation at Macquarie University Art Gallery in Sydney Oz from next week and will be revising some of the psychedelic productions we did there in 1971-1974. Part of my installation will contain some definitions for todays young folk. Here are my definitions of some words we use and i would love some feedback and further suggestions from this group of experts. NOTE: about definitions: PSYCHEDELIC the word was coined in 1956 by chemist Humphrey Osmond in a letter to author Aldous Huxley to mean ‘mind manifesting and expanding awareness”. Later it also came to be used to describe almost any work utilising bright contrasting colours. LUMINO KINETIC ART was named by Frank Popper, Professor of Aesthetics at Paris University,1966 and the author of the defining books about Kinetic Art. LIGHTSHOW a form of entertainment developed by Counter Culture artists in the 1960s consisting chiefly of constantly changing patterns of light and color, often accompanied by music and movement and incorporating the use of lighting, special effects, handmade and other projection devices such as Wetshows or Liquid shows, Lumino Kinetic Sculpture, video, film, movement and staging usually but not always producing a synaesthetic and mind altering contemplative effect when performed live with rock bands and other musical forms in an improvised manner. The technique, using stroboscopes, was brought to my attention in an essay ‘The Dream Machine’ about the work of Bryon Gysin and William Burroughs in Olympia Magazine,1962. The word LIGHT SHOW was first used and popularised by Robert C. Beck in his publication “Color Games Light Show Manual” 1966 and later shortened by popular use to LIGHTSHOW. feel free to comment and /or correct me. +++++++ positivity and xxxxxlove
