Hello friends, Yesterday was an important day, as Canadians - TopicsExpress

Hello friends, Yesterday was an important day, as Canadians were participating in the “Bell Lets Talk” campaign which focuses on mental health issues. This day highlights that talking is the first step toward ending the stigma and bringing about change on mental health. Mental illness is one of the most widespread health issues in Canada. Every year, one in five Canadians will experience a mental health problem or mental illness. The unemployment rate among people with serious mental health problems is between 70 and 90 percent. And Canada is the only G7 country that has yet to implement a mental health strategy. Millions of Canadians and their families have been affected by mental illness. We need to keep talking about it. It helps. And in so doing, I want to bring the issue of eating disorders to your attention. These debilitating, serious mental health disorders affect both girls and boys, and women and men. As a former athlete, I saw firsthand the ravages of eating disorders, and how families fought for real help. Families still fight for help. We need a national registry and strategy for eating disorders; and we need funding for treatment, as families requiring long-term help are forced to leave our country. Today Canadians who are living with mental health disorders should remember they are not alone and that we are standing with them. Thinking of you all, Kirsty
