Hello, hope this question is on topic enough and hope someone here can address it. As everyone knows Inmarsat yesterday claimed to have (or nearly have) eliminated the possibility of flight 370 having gone north based on analysis of the Doppler effect of the pings the satellite received from the plane. Since the satellite is in a geo-stationary position it would seem to me that any possible paths or points to the north or the south would be exact mirror images of each other, allowing perhaps for a localization of the last ping location along EITHER of the two arcs, but not distinguishing BETWEEN the two arcs. As far as I can see any explanation must involve some way in which the real world situation must differ from the ideal geometric description. I have two thoughts on this but they both seem unlikely so I wont mention them at first. Also, to be clear, the Inmarsat analysis has been presented as new and independent evidence so we should ignore all other issues or explanations for ignoring the northern direction such as the likelihood of radar detection in the north.
