Hello people! Heres a letter from a fellow named George. He will tell you about an exciting opportunity to help kids make robots! --- Hello! Im a 4th year computing student, and for the last three years, a mentor of FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Team 1884. If youre not familiar with FIRST, or FRC, its a global (originated in the US) program to teach kids engineering concepts through robotics competition. FRC is the high-school (ages 14-18) competition where teams of students have 6 weeks (in January and February) to build a competitive robot to take part in that years specific game. Its like sports meets robots (not robot wars). There are lots of clips out there, but heres a match from the World Finals from this year: https://youtube/watch?v=jdJutaggCMk The UK currently has one registered team: Team 1884 Griffins. Theyre looking for mentors called Griffin Fellows who are enthusiastic about engineering, robots and inspiring kids. Theyre based in St. Johns Wood. The goal of the position is to get involved and help the kids to brainstorm, design and build using engineering principles by actually taking part in the process - this is collaborative mentorship, not formal teaching. There are no formal qualifications required (although any technical skills will help), and if youre curious but not fully-committed you can also just try it out. The position is PAID (through a stipend), includes free meals and possibly a free (hotel + flight paid) trip to New York in March to take part in the actual competition. Email me ([email protected]) if youre interested, or if you want to know more! Thanks!
