Hello to all VanderHoevens, wherever you are in this world! Im a Van der Hoeven too, born and raised in Vlaardingen, Holland. Jan, Arie, Pieter and Adrie are the most common names in my family. My ancestors were mostly fishermen, catching the famous Dutch haring. When I was a girl, I swore I would never marry a sailor, but of course I did. My husband is not a sailor anymore, but we do live in a Greek fishermen’s village now, so I guess the sea is still in my blood. A long time ago I wrote a short story based on the deaths of my great- great- grandfather Jan and his son Pieter, who both died on the same day, somewhere at the Noordzee, their bodies never found. Being a sailor’s wife myself, I could totally relate to the grief of my great- great- grandmother, and by telling her story, I wanted to honour all those brave women who managed to keep their families together, no matter what personal grief they had to endure. The story won an award, which was the start of my writing career. So, especially for those of the VanderHoevens somewhere in this world, who still have some Vlaardings fishermen’s blood running through their veins, I published the story in English at my website for all to read.
