Hello – a bit of a ‘one from the heart’ here. I have, over the last couple of years organised a couple of mini music festivals in Southwell, both based at the same two venues, The Old Coach House and The Hearty Goodfellow. The events – Raise The Roof and Alehouse Rock – raised much-needed funds for the following charities respectively, Framework and the British Red Cross Typhoon Haiyan Appeal, and the good people of Southwell, as always, turned out in their droves to support the events. I am currently in the early stages of planning a similar event for late spring/early summer 2015. No dates set yet, but it will be at a weekend and will not clash with the folk festival, Glastonbury, or the beer festival in early July. These are very early days in the planning process for the event, which is tentatively called ‘Alehouse Rock II’, but I am well on the way to getting an exciting line-up in place and, in the immortal words of messrs K&H (or possible Lennon and McCartney) a splendid time is guaranteed for all. Since the first Alehouse Rock last January I have, unfortunately, been diagnosed with cancer, so I feel it appropriate that this years event should support a cancer charity, but this raises the question of which of many it is best to support. I have my own thoughts on the matter of course, especially given some of the fantastic support I have received. However, I realise that there are so many people out there whose lives have been touched by this terrible, ugly, cruel disease be it personally or through family and friends. I also know how important it is to support charities and organisations that offer treatment, support, and help of all types on a local level. The people of Southwell and its environs have proved so generous and enthusiastic in supporting the previous events, and I know how wholeheartedly they will, again, throw themselves into this one. So, I feel it is only fair that I should, rather than choose a charity myself, open the doors to the people who will, ultimately, be giving their money to the cause…..YOU!! I will, therefore, leave this here for two weeks (I’ll take it down on the night of Friday 16th January). Between now and then I’d like your suggestions for a suitable recipient for what will, I hope, be a fairly significant donation. I will then collate the suggestions and set up a vote which will stay open until the end of January, at which time a decision will be made. Does that sound fair enough? All helpful hints and or suggestions on maximising the funds raised at this event will be gratefully received, as will all other offers of help and I’m sure that, as ever, I can rely on the good folks of Southwell to step up to the plate. In the meantime, please share this wherever you can, and if you need to contact me directly you can get me on 07970 620603, or at tyheeslim@gmail
