Help me brainstorm! 20+ laying hens. Half are last years chicks, half are from the year before. Same feed Ive always given my hens, a locally ground mixture of a recipe I found in Chickens in Your Backyard. I supplement with kitchen scraps, weeds, trimmings from the grocery store, etc. We had a major slowdown in egg-laying as winter came on, although we do have lights on in the henhouse from 4-7am or so. I know the older girls went through a molt. The egg supply is picking up now, BUT the quality of eggs is like nothing weve ever seen before. Theyre runny; when we fry them, they seem more liquid and run all over the griddle. No stand-up egg whites here! They also have so-so yolks. I DO have some different breeds than usual, and my hens from this year were no grown here, but bought from local folks when they were about 5 months old. Any thoughts on what might be causing this?
