Help me ponder something. Imagine youre building a vehicle for festivals and camping, with an eye on later over landing. The options are, Landrover 101, Bedford M type 4x4 army truck, Pinzgauer. What are the pluses and minuses? Size (for easy city use, festival access, narrow trails in foreign climes) 1 Landrover 2 Pinzgauer 3 Bedford Interior space (all of these would get either a custom Luton with a bed in the cabover, or a pop top to get the bed out of the main cabin) 1 Bedford 2 Pinzgauer 3 Landrover Go-anywhere ability 1) Pinzgauer. Portal axles, 6 wheel drive, agile; Im not sure theres anything you can sleep in thats as capable as A Pinzgauer 2) Bedford. Bigger wheels and more ground clearance means it will go where a Landy cant 3) Landrover Purchase cost (unconverted. Ready built overlanders are impossible to estimate) 1) Bedford - £5000 2) Landrover - £8000+ 3) Pinzgauer - £20,000+ Running cost (this is where it gets tricky) 1) Pinzgauer? 5 or 6 cylinder diesel 2) Landrover? I know a lot were V8 with a low ratio gearbox. Are there exceptions? 3) Bedford? You can get 15-20 mpg from the big sixes, which might be better than a V8 101 Serviceability (at home the Landy probably wins; great parts availability and would fit on a standard vehicle lift) 1) Bedford - found all over the world, tough, reliable, easily fixable 2) Landrover - also found all over, but in smaller numbers, specially the 101, also made of meccano, but a bit more vulnerable than the Bedford. 3) Pinzgauer - who knows? Also, what other options am I missing?
