Henri Maillardets Draughtsman-Writer aka Maillardets Automaton is seen on display at the Franklin Institute Science Museum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on February 24, 2012. In the background is Charles Penniman, age 83, who is the caretaker and operator of the automaton. Henri Maillardet built the mechanical figure in 1810 which is animated by a pair of thick main springs, spring-driven motors, and brass cams. The automaton also contains memory from which it can write three poems (two in French, one in English) and render four drawings which are shown below after the video demonstration. The English poem reads: Unerring is my hand tho small May I not add with truth I do my best to please you all Encourage then my Youth
