Here are 3 steps to help kids make better choices at parties/cookouts: 1. Scout the unlimited Check out what foods offered fall into the unlimited category. The proteins, fruits and vegetables are all unlimited- this stuff will help to fill the child up. Don’t worry about dips and dressings; those are small rocks and if they make your child eat more of the good stuff, then great. 2. Set Boundaries Set boundaries with Treat Strategies or say: “Let’s pick one dessert today” OR “If you want, we’ll do 10 bites of dessert today. You’ll pick!” Set the boundaries you are comfortable with and reinforce them. 3. Just drink water There is no reason for the child to be drinking a juice. Really. None. Just have the child drink water unless the child wants to use a “treat” on juice. How about a soda? Even less of a reason to drink soda. Period. Oh, what about flavored water/ice tea with artificial sweeteners? Nope! Just drink water! (you could brew your own de-caf tea and use stevia to sweeten if you need to offer something else). Yes, I am anti-juice and soda, in case you did not notice #sorrynotsorry :)
