Here are activities to keep you and your little one entertained and educated today and through the weekend. Enjoy! Day 5: Draw a picture Encourage your child to draw a picture. When she’s finished, ask her to “sign” her artwork by writing her name on the picture. Drawing and scribbling are the first steps toward learning to write. Often, children’s scribbles will resemble letters of the alphabet. One of the first words any child wants to learn to write is her name. Encourage your child to “sign” all her artwork. It’s okay if her first attempts don’t spell her name exactly. ********************************* Day 6: Read a rhyming story Read a rhyming story or nursery rhyme together with your child. Pause at the end of some lines to let your child fill in the rhyming words. “Hickory dickory dock, the mouse ran up the _______.” Letting children fill in the rhyming words in a story does several things. It encourages them to listen carefully, an important part of building oral language skills. It helps them recognize the different beginning sounds in words that rhyme, an important phonological awareness skill. And it makes reading active, which make it more fun! *********************************** Day 7: Look at some pictures Look at the pictures in a book, newspaper or magazine together. Talk about what you and your child see. Can you make up a story to go with the pictures? Encourage your child to look at the details in pictures or photographs when you read together. Help him use new words by asking questions: “What color is the hat?” “Which tree is taller?” “Why do you think the boy is sad in this picture?”
