Here are some details of coastal protection works that will begin in the next couple of weeks at Hengistbury Head: Coastal Protection Works September 2014: The severe storms we experienced last winter caused considerable damage to the groynes and gabions at Hengistbury Head. As a result, repairs are necessary to reinforce our sea defences so that the surrounding properties continue to be protected. When is it happening? Works will commence on 8th September 2014 and are planned to take approximately two months. How is it being paid for? The work is being entirely funded via emergency grant funding from the Environment Agency and DEFRA. What will be the hours of working? The work will be carried out around the tides. This will mean early morning and evening working and every effort will be made to minimise any noise impact on local properties. Where will the works compound be? The site compound will be located in Solent Beach car park and direct access will be provided for works vehicles to get access onto the beach from the car park. Will there be deliveries and vehicle movement? Rock amour will be used to repair the groynes and this will need to be brought in by road. Approximately 10 deliveries are expected each day and a route will be agreed with Bournemouth Council’s Highways team that minimises disruption and disturbance to local residents. The works will include; - Rock amour rebuild of Groynes 55, 56 & 57, Hengistbury Head; - Repairs and rebuild of the Hengistbury Head Long Groyne; - Repairs and rebuild to Gabion Revetment (the rock-filled bank) at Double Dykes, Hengistbury Head.
