Here are three genealogical lectures that are scheduled in Northern Virginia during this week. 1. Judy Russell will speak on “Remember The Ladies” The program is free and open to the general public. No advance registration is required. Tuesday, November 18, 2014 1:00 PM Mount Vernon Genealogical Society Hollin Hall Senior Center Room 112 1500 Shenandoah Road Alexandria, Virginia Additional details at MVGenealogy.org/ . In early America, women were all too often the people who just weren’t there: not in the records, not in the censuses, not on juries, not in the voting booth. The common law brought over by the colonists relegated women to “protected” — second-class — status. There were exceptions but, generally, women had good cause to wish, as Abigail Adams did, that their husbands would “remember the ladies, and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors.” Understanding the law as to the legal status and rights of women as it existed and changed over the years helps provide clues to finding their identities today. Judy Russell, JD, CG, CGL, is a genealogist with a law degree which gives her a unique perspective. As she says, “Without understanding the context in which events took place and records were created, we miss so much of both the significance and the flavor of what happened.” Judy is a member of the National Genealogical Society (NGS), the Association of Professional Genealogists (APG), and, among others, the state genealogical societies of New Jersey, North Caroline, Virginia, Texas and Illinois. She serves on the faculty at Samford, Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG), Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh (GRIP), and Boston University’s Center for Professional Education. Don’t miss her instructive, lively and entertaining blog at legalgenealogist/blog/. 2. Victor Dunn will speak on “Before Virginia: Finding the Origins of Colonial Immigrants” Send an e-mail to [email protected] or call (703) 792-4540 to reserve a seat for this free program. Tuesday, November 18, 2014 7:00 PM Presented by RELIC Bull Run Regional Library 8051 Ashton Avenue Manassas, VA 20109 Determining a Virginian immigrant’s origins can be a challenge. Find out what sources and techniques are available from certified genealogist Victor Dunn. 3. Sharon Hodges will speak on “Reading About the Past: Using Diaries/Letters/Journals” The program is free and open to the general public. No advance registration is required. Thursday, November 20, 2014 7:30 PM Fairfax Genealogical Society Kilmer Middle School 8100 Wolftrap Road Vienna, Virginia. Additional details at fxgs.org/ . Today reading someone’s diary may get one in trouble, but when it comes to the past diaries and journals should not be overlooked. A diary or journal is a first-hand account of life and enables a researcher to learn about the area where an ancestor resided. A diary is an object from the past that has a story to tell. It may not be easy to find such records, but the search could lead to valuable information. Sharon Hodges is a professional genealogist, author, and teacher having lectured throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. She is a grader for the NGS Home Study Course, a graduate of the NIGR, and often a guest on Tracing Your Family Roots. Sharon is a member of numerous local and national genealogical societies having served on the Board of several Societies and is currently President of the Mt. Vernon Genealogical Society. These and other events can be found on Harold’s List of Upcoming Genealogy Events that can be found at mvgenealogy.org/PDFs/Upcoming_Genealogy_Events.pdf .
