Here are two more entries from my Mersey Beat Encyclopedia: HUGHES, GEOFFREY. Geoff was born in Wallasey on 2 February 1944. He attended Ranworth Square Primary and then Abbotsford Secondary Modern in Norris Green, both in Liverpool. He was a member of local group the Travellers and worked in a car showroom close to the Mersey Beat offices. He was a regular at the Blue Angel club and after meeting Alun Owen there, was given a part in the musical ‘Maggie May.’ From then he enjoyed a very successful career in acting with his most famous roles being Eddie Yates in ‘Coronation Street’, Onslow in ‘Keeping Up Appearances’ and Twiggy in ‘The Royale Family’. He was also the voice of Paul McCartney in the animated film of ‘Yellow Submarine’. Geoff suffered from prostate cancer and passed away on 27 July 2012. KEYES, THOM. Although born in California on 4 August 1949, Thom was reared in Britain. His father was an executive at Liverpool Corporation Passenger Transport and Thom was a spectator at many of the major venues locally on Merseyside. He often teamed up with his friend Johnny Byrne. Thom travelled to gigs with Faron’s Flamingos to research his debut novel, ‘All Night Stand.’ This was the first book about the life of a fictitious Liverpool group when it was first published in Britain in 1966 by W.H.Allen. He moved to London, along with Johnny Byrne and both began writing for sci-fi TV series such as ‘Space 1999’. American producer, Shel Talmy, based in London, wanted to make a film of ‘All Night Stand’ and commissioned Ray Davis of the Kinks to write the theme tune. ‘All Night Stand’ by the Thoughts was released on Talmy’s Planet Records on Planet 45-118 in 1966, although the film was never made. Thom died in 1995 during an accident when he was climbing in South America. He was only 46 years old.
