Here in the Town of Greig, there has been a fight to protect our spring water from commercial development for over ten years now. John T. and Lynn Smoke of Bangor, Pennsylvania purchased approximately 200 acres of land which happens to adjoin our own property. THEY THEN BEGAN THEIR EFFORTS TO ESTABLISH A SPRING WATER BUSINESS WHICH WOULD INVOLVE THE REMOVAL OF APPROXIMATELY 288,000 GALLONS OF WATER PER DAY FROM THE SPRINGS THAT RUN ABOVE, AS WELL AS UNDERGROUND ON HIS AND NEIGHBORING PROPERTIES. Those springs feed Tannery Creek which crosses the Greig Rd. at the Burdicks Crossing intersection. They have already built several wells to collect the water that comes to the surface. The wells themselves are located in a rural-residential zone which does not permit commercial business. Their plan is to build a pipeline from those wells, through their property, under the Greig Road, through the wetlands, and under the Black River to a collection site in the Town of Turin. They currently are fighting the Town of Greig to obtain a Special Permit to build the pipeline, in spite of the fact that the wells are on land that IS NOT ZONED COMMERCIAL. There is much more to the story, but this is a brief summary. Our contention is that the water does not belong to anyone. It flows from one persons land to anothers. We have serious concerns about the environmental impact of such an extensive water withdrawal and have done everything possible so far to stop this project. It has been a long and arduous fight, but we need to continue in our resolve. Therefore, we ask you and anyone you know who may be interested to become involved. Have your friends make a FB friend request to me, Lorrie Benzing, and I will add them to this group. I will do my best to keep all of you informed and hopefully you will be able to support us.
