Here is a chart..that will be of interest to everyone on here...it is the american Steel Institute classification of the codes ofr the basic steels....there are other designations for other steel types..particularly Tool and Stainless...but...when people talk of 4140 steels or 5160 steels...this will give you a basic understanding of the Type of steel. A LOT of factors affect how the steel behaves...not least of which is the proportion of and combinations of different ALLOYS ADDED!...the same alloys...added in different proportions can affect the same steel in different ways...so there is FAR MORE to it ...but this chart gives you the Base..or Starting point of the steels! Second figure indicates a sub-division of the major class And the percentage of t he major alloying elements. This is true of many of the alloy steels. The third and Fourth figures are most important for welding because they indicate carbon in hundredths of a percent. The chart doesnt show the same here as on line...but is in the correct order...thus..Carbon Steel (First) is the 10xx....Resulphurized Steel is 11XX and so on....match the ordered number of the steel t the order of the designation...top to bottom.
