Here is a copy from my blog about my visit to the British embassy yesterday and how it took an impact on us about the Philippines: Cebu City, Philippines Went to the embassy and met a British ambassador who was very pleased to welcome us to the Philippines. We all had a sit down and talked all about what we needed to know about this country- it was a big cultural shock and took a big impact on me. Of course Im going to tell you why: 1. 20% of population are living below the poverty line. 2. Government doesnt help the people with disability but they provides PhilHeath for people who are ill. 3. Not many schools are fully funded from the government, mainly are funded by an individual business or from the agency overseas. There are not enough children to get in one classroom so theyve got the shift of going into school e.g. Half of the class may go only in the mornings and the rest goes in the afternoon. 4. There is no law on disability such as disability acts. 5. A typhoon took a massive impact on the Filipino community in many islands in November 2013- there are still millions of people affected by it today without home, water, electricity and money. British aid funded the money to the government to help them to pay out homes , water, and electricity for those people who was affected by it BUT the government never got around to it yet. 6. People who needed a daily support to aid them with their lifestyle such as wheelchair will have to make their own f they cant afford one. Deaf people also have to pay for their own hearing aids. 7. People attitude towards people with the disability are very narrow minded and avoidable. They are embarrassed if their family member is one of them and often hides them. In employment there are not many of people with the disability have achieved in finding work. British embassy are fighting for the rights to be Introduced. They also are trying to change the attitude of people towards to the disability. Theyre fighting for the Philippines government to improves its country and catch up to be on the same level as the U.K. Theyre also very pleased with the fact that there is deaf volunteers like us from the UK to work in this country and makes the difference to prove Filipinos that people with the disability can do anything! Now Im quite excited to work here for the next three months as part of international citizen service programme and see the difference when I leave!
