Here is a good example of training to help a dog handle having their ears cleaned (we would follow a similar process with any handling we want a dog to feel good about, or training any behavior for that matter). The trainer has decided on a behavior she wants the dog to perform while she gradually increases the intrusiveness of the procedure. Shes keeping track of the reps and when the dog can stay in the down with his ears being handled for 5 out of 6 reps shes changing whats shes doing slightly, lingering longer at the ear, or starting to rub them, etc. If the dog cant shell repeat what shes doing until the dog can, before changing what shes doing. The dog can get up and leave anytime. I love the very beginning when you see a dog who is savvy to the game. Hes obviously happy seeing all the paraphernalia and the trainers behavior predicting something fun is about to happen. This is the kind of training that can save dogs lives.
