Here is a little primitive technology blog. Yesterday I was blown - TopicsExpress

Here is a little primitive technology blog. Yesterday I was blown away by my friend Sean Taylors blowguns and darts. He was in one of my classes years ago and we have been having phone conversations about the subject a lot. He showed me a long 7 foot blowgun and said it kinked or creased when he tried to straighten it. My first thought was yeah I wrote about it in my book and then remembered I am the only one with it. I told him to look at the one in the museum by Hayes Lossaih it has about 5 kinks in it. As technologists are we trying to be to perfect on our replications? I mean if a master blowgun maker has that many kinks in his gun does he know something we do not know? Is our strive for perfection making us biased on the technology. One problem is that most books and museum only illustrate or display the best example. There are a lot more horrible looking pieces that worked perfectly and helped the person survive but we only see the best. Also a lot of these best pieces are grave goods never intended to be used so we are replicating items that the original makers did not intend to be used. Maybe by striving to reach the perfection of the past we are missing the day to day big picture. Still I almost cried seeing the awesome blowguns Sean made.
