Here is a thought for President Kikwete. I am not sure of the exact numbers but I believe that the tourism industry in Tanzania is over a billion dollar business. Employing around 600.000 people. Now with an average support group of 5 to 7 those 600.000 actually make sure that around 4.000.000 (million yes) people live comparably well in a country where rural polulations live well under poverty rates. That is around 10% of the population. What will happen to the economy, welfare of people if tourism plummets? That will happen if iconic species like ellies and rhinos are extinct, the great migration is threatened, snows disappear on Kili, oil will be drilled in Lake Tanganyka, gas and uranium mined in the Selous area etc. etc. Numbers to think about no Mr. Kikwete? How about trying to make sure that profits of eco-tourism actually stay in Tanzania in stead of great conglomerates of foreign financers. And creating an infrastructure that actually boosts ecotourism etc. Its like President Khama of Botswana said: Killing your wildlife is actually shooting yourself in the foot!
