Here is an example of a healthy fawn lying in a normal position trying to blend in. He does not need any help. Many people are calling about fawn deer that they are finding by themselves. They are just being born starting a couple of weeks ago. They may be found lying quietly in a field, along a road or in a yard quietly. That does not mean it is an orphan. If you are in the area, mom will stay away. If it is next to a road, move it back into a safe location. If you find one and there is no dead mother, leave it there and check back in 12-24 hours. Actually, it is not unusual to see a fawn in the yard for a couple of days if you live in the woods. Mom parked the baby there because it is a safe spot. Please don’t assume it is orphaned unless you find it next to a dead doe. Even then, that does not mean that is mom. Someone just called a fellow rehabber about a fawn lying next to a dead deer. When they went to pick it up, the fawn cried…mom came after the person. The person ran like the dickens and all was well. Clues that a fawn is in trouble: Injured Flies, maggots or fly eggs on fur (fly eggs look like saw dust) too weak to stand Legs are outstretched and not folded up Lying on its side Constant crying for hours If you are not sure, you are always welcome to give us a call. 814-692-0004
