Here is an issue that could affect every Bay Ridge resident who uses Lutheran Medical Centers ER -- I was at the ER with a family member with organ failure and related issues twice in the past year. As we waited roughly 20 hours each time for a bed (one time a regular bed, another time ICU), we watched several drunks/substance abusers/etc. distract ER staff with their antics and take up beds. The ER staff even know some of these people by name because they land there so often. We were told that the ER used to handle self-inflicted, usually non-life threatening cases of substance abuse separately. Id like to suggest that there be a movement toward that again before any more seriously-ill patients suffer while these people sober up because it is horrible to see several hospital staff and beds be tied up from assisting with the real emergencies occur around them. What can we do to fix this issue that could affect anyone who ends up in that important and crowded ER?
