Here is an recap of my explanation to a client about the multiple health and performance benefits associated with whole oats. First of all, oatmeal is a whole-grain, which means it contains all parts of the green kernel – brand, endosperm and germ – as well as the health benefits. It has plenty of protein and soluble fiber to help you feel full and restore your glycogen glucose levels after a long night sleep. It is also higher in protein and more satiating than most other breakfast cereals. In terms of weight control, study show that an increasing fiber intake helps you feel full longer, thereby decreasing subsequent hunger. Also the fiber helps to stabilize and maintain blood sugar levels – meaning, you are not going to get the spike from the carbohydrates, and then have a quick fall soon after as the higher glycemic foods, such as a bagel and box serials do. Finally, oats are naturally cholesterol free and low in saturated fat along with sodium. Keep in mind the best oatmeal has only one thing in the ingredients – 100% rolled whole oats. Even the old-fashioned are still cut oats only take five minutes to make on the stove or less in the microwave.
