Here is an update on Madison, our now-famous rescue dog. Long - TopicsExpress

Here is an update on Madison, our now-famous rescue dog. Long story short: she was saved by Larissa Gavin working through Corridor Rescue in Houston with her 3 pups. After we evaluated the whole family, it was clear that there were some problems. One puppy required an amputation and all three pups were re-homed through PupSquad. Madison was found to have a fractured spine that should have made her incontinent or even paralyzed, but she seemed FINE! She was placed on a private jet to Chicago where she somehow ESCAPED and was lost in the freezing cold for 5 days before she was found! The rest of the story is below - truly awesome! Hey there!!! Madison is one special peanut... and she has LOTS of people behind her :) You may have talked to Michelle already, but wanted to touch base as well. I just talked to Pam concerning the vet visit today. Madison isnt walking because her pads are so badly damaged (Pam is carrying her everywhere); so thankfully its not her back at this point. However, the x-rays were provided to their orthopaedic specialist and as originally thought, its not good. The Specialist was amazed that she has control of her bowels or tail. The specialist indicated that without surgery there is a chance she may be fine for the rest of her life, but there is also the chance that she might sneeze and blow the disk resulting in paralysis. The surgery would usually run $6,000 or more. After hearing her story the specialist that Illinois uses offered to do the surgery for $3,000... and can get her in next Tuesday. The main question is whats best for Madison. At this point its not fair to transport her anywhere, taking into account her pads, and the risk involved with a long drive and jumping in and out of the car. Then, there is the need for surgery and the need to be in a home that can accommodate her post-surgical needs. Pam has been the head of Illinois rescue for quite some time, and she is at home all day (and runs a kennel) and has the ability to provide Madison with everything she needs. In the end, in our hearts, we feel that the best thing for Madison is to stay with Pam and Illinois Rescue and not to be moved to us. They will get her into surgery for her back asap, and provide the heartworm treatment. Their screening process is no different than ours, and they will find her a loving forever home that will cherish her for the rest of her life. I hope you are ok with this decision. I know without a doubt she is where she needs to be right now - moving her to us would be too risky, and she has round-the-clock care with Pam (whereas Jenny and all our other volunteers must work, so shed be alone at times during the week). Let me know if you have questions... Pam will keep us posted on her progress. Above all, thank you for all that youve done for her!!! I sure hope you continue in rescue - you are a natural :) Jennifer Vander Vorst, Doberman Rescue Alliance of Wisconsin, Inc.
