Here is another letter to the editor that is worth sharing: There’s Alternatives City council voted almost unanimously to force an annexation upon the Valley when there are alternatives to recap funds spent on services for us. The post office said they received over 500 certified letters posted to all property owners effected by the proposed annexation; twice! Let’s take that 1000 @$6.40/letter. That comes to $6400 JUST for notifications. Now comes the cost to city tax payers for special election; costs $1320 (wages only). According to the cities’ own figures of what the Valley leaches in funds, it is just over $2700. WASTE! Nearly 3X said service costs. Fire districts/special assessments cost nearly nothing to do and will save ALL of us huge amounts of money. I’m no CPA but that is just dumb. These repeated attempts to annex are senseless, wasted tax dollars! The city could better spend those tax dollars to grow and regulate existing open spaces recently annexed (North Spearfish on 385 and along I-90 to exit 17; approximately 4,200 acres (Brett, Lawrence County Planning and Zoning). Since projected growth means there’s need for home sites; there sits open, available land ready to develop. It is not the rich Valley soil; a limited resource that has made agriculture a large part of your economy and history. Before you vote, drive the proposed annexation area and see that most of us are blue collar/middle class people who cannot afford annexation. I/We are fighting to save our homes! Please vote NO on Dec. 10th to SAVE THE VALLEY!
