Here is more terrific news: The new Algebra 1 in Materials, Products, Energy, and Design (AMPED) course offered at Loveland High School recently received a $25,000.00 grant from the OtterCares Foundation. This grant helps AMPED carry out the mission of strengthening education for ALL students. This money will be added to the initial investment of $125,000.00 of funds provided by the Thompson School District for start up expenses. The primary purpose of the AMPED program is to close the achievement gap in math by connecting it to real world problems with which students interact with on a regular basis. By using real world problems as an entry point to math, students will never ask, When am I ever going to need to know this? The programs core is driven by a number of Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways, including manufacturing, business, power, energy, research and development. Teaching math in the context of pathways (as evidenced by Geometry in Construction outcomes) enables students to gain a better understanding of the material and an ability to retain difficult concepts. Furthermore, this type of environment fosters innovation and entrepreneurial skills in students and creates a pathway for them to give back to their communities. This aligns with the mission of the OtterCares Foundation because their purpose and belief is, One young and inspired mind can change the world. OtterCares strives to support efforts in development of the entrepreneurial spirit, philanthropic mindedness, and educational innovation, all of which are present in the AMPED program. With these funds and continued support from OtterCares, the team of AMPED teachers––Scott Burke, Anne Larson, Alex Adkisson, Lara Crisp, and Tom Moore (retired)––teach students all of their algebra 1 math standards through the natural progression of building a business from the ground up. Initially, they will run an in-house t-shirt and apparel enterprise capable of designing, manufacturing, and delivering high quality, custom apparel. The inaugural cohort of 150 students has already begun working on fulfilling two orders with more to come in the coming weeks. Proceeds will fund the program on a yearly basis and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to a charity of the students choosing. Other key aspects of the program include: Advanced Manufacturing Techniques Automation and Robotics Power and Energy Design and Invention CNC Programing Rapid Proto-typing The AMPED program is incredibly grateful to the OtterCares Foundation and its continued support and commitment to help bring innovative, comprehensive programs to students.
