Here is my Birth Story..I am officially 51 yrs young today.. i was born at 6:26 am Sept 5. It was a very scary labour for my mother..they had to paddle across the lake to get to the mainland from Shoal Lake 40 during the wee hours of the morning.. there was only 2 cars on the rez but the drivers had no license nor insurance to drive on the highway so they only drove my mom & grandma Doris to the hwy.. dropped them off on the Shoal Lake Road and Hwy 17.. they waited & tried to hitchhike to Kenora to no avail.. my mothers contractions were coming closer and closer and my grandmother made my mother a place to lay down by the highway on the rocks.. she told her to keep doing shallow breaths.. then my Nanie heard a car coming down the highway so she climbed down the rock and tried to flag down a MTO car but it drove down the highway..(back then they were not allowed to pick up passengers).. then the man slowed down.. my grandma was waving her hands frantically and waving up towards the rocks.. then the man stopped and came back to see what was happening.. He picked them up & drove them to Kenoras old St. Joes Hospital.. My mothers contractions were pretty heavy and close together.. just seconds apart.. then as they got my ma in the elevator to take her to maternity she drew her last strength and boom i was born.. in between floors & in the elevator.. the rest is history.. Im so thankful for that man whom picked up my ma & grandma that morning for I could have been born on the Hwy 17 right at Shoal Lake Road.. I have asked my ma what that mans name was but she cant remember.. but i am named after the nurse that was with my mother in the elevator.. yup my life has been a pretty bumpy ride after that but Im thankful for everything & to the Lord for providing me with life..Chii Miiqwetch
