Here is my Rant & Rave for the 2014 Season! I couldnt help but - TopicsExpress

Here is my Rant & Rave for the 2014 Season! I couldnt help but observe for the last several months here since NY legalized the crossbow on 4/1/14 permanently for use here in NY the modern crazy and proliferation of goods and gear being sold and advertised in our hunting magazines, stores, web sites, etc. - all in the name of guaranteeing some guy or gal who goes out and purchases these products instant success overnight while out hunting bagging a record whitetail of 5-1/2 yrs old and better than 10 points and perhaps over 200 lbs in weight! Guys, this is sad that these hunting shows and magazines have been laden with wares that IF purchased they will INSTANTLY turn you into a successful hunter such as Fred Bear, Ted Nugent, Bill Jordon, Stan Potts, etc. overnight. Today in crossbow hunting alone - we have prob over 20 manufacturers whom have jumped on the bandwagon in making bows looking to cash in on the latest and greatest craze, and prob over 20 companies making carbon bolts/arrows as well. Now lets add another 20 manufactures making broadheads as well! Its no wonder why hunters are SO confused and buying and trying so many wares, are going broke, going crazy over getting their bows to shoot a 1 inch group at 60 yards, and their wives prob going nuts over their spending on gear! Ughhhh! Guys! This isnt really Rocket Science! Yes! We want to be the most ethical and accurate hunters out there when we go afield - but our woodsman-ship and archery skills are being lost to modern gadgetry such as bow sights and scopes, rangefinders, mechanical broadheads, trail cameras, carbon scent suits, buck lures, deer calls, treestands, GPS, fletching, lighted nocks, etc. When will it end? We have some poor smuck out there buying-into the belief that IF he/she buys a $1,000 crossbow, theyre twice as more-inclined to bag a deer as the guy/gal toting a $500 crossbow! Are you kidding me? Total absurdity! DO you think that once-greats such as Fred Bear, Howard Hill, Ben Pearson, G. Fred Asbell, and the Wensel Brothers all had all this crap on their bows to ensure success? NO! Pick up ANY archery rag today - be it - Bowhunting World, Bowhunter, Deer & Deer Hunter, etc. and I guarantee you that every other page has an ad for SOMETHING from a bow manufacturer to a company that markets release aids, to camo clothing, Scent Lok suits, arrows, broadheads, sights, quivers, and then some! When does it end already? Its enuff to make a guy want to just dump their modern gear and yell Ive had enuff! and want to go back to hunting the old way of using a recurve or longbow! Simplicity! A bow, arrows, broadhead, shooting tab or glove and thats about it! Guys are so worried about if a broadhead is 100 or 125 grs, mechanical or fixed blade - 2 blade or 4 blade! WTH? Do you think Fred Bear had such a problem choosing a head? Lord! Think about it guys! $39.99 / 3 broadheads? Hell! I am a RN and I think I am in the wrong field! Hell - I could have made a lot more money designing and marketing broadheads for Gods sake! LOL. My point IS guys - 1) You cant harvest a deer sitting home reading about it 2) You need to get out in the woods and scout! Cameras dont fully replace reading the signs of deer tracks, bedding areas, food areas, water, deer runs, etc. 3) Books and magazines and web site are great for learning and sharing info and such - but nothing replaces the woods and Mother Nature herself! 4) Shoot your bow and HAVE FUN! Dont ever STOP having fun and ENJOY yourself! 5) And remember - a deer REALLY dont know the diff between 350 or 400 fps per se - all things being equal! Sure - the deer at 50 yards might be less apt to jump the string and duck - but Hell! Dont think you have to go out and necessarily by a new bow that is 50 fps faster and dropping another $500+ dollars on it as well! Just have fun!
