Here is my make-up free selfie ! This week I got my yearly mammogram done. If you havent ever had one let me set you straight? It isnt bad at all. I personally go to Royal Woman’s Hospital (inside Prince of Wales Hospital- the staff are brilliant here and you dont feel weird!). It takes about 2-3 hours. You have to ring up and make an appointment, sometimes a month or two prior. Then you go to your local doctor who gives you a referral to the centre of your choice...mine is Woman’s Breast Clinic part of Royal Woman’s Hospital as i said. You put the date of your appointment in your diary and show up on the day & time. What happens at the appointment? You are given a gown so you can cover up your top half and of course leave your bottom half of clothing on……while you wait for a short time to have the mammogram. Your right breast is placed between two solid perspex type flat panels or plates. They slowly press the breast between them…I know your squirming a bit reading this but seriously they do it slowly so it doesn’t really hurt just uncomfortable for around 2 to 3 minutes a breast.……(you’ve spent a lot longer in an annoying bra than that). The mammogram bar type panel scans across the breast above the Perspex sheet…yep your breasts look a bit like a pizza but just have a laugh and decide which type they are! The machine scanning takes about 6 seconds & then they release the breast. Then the technician does this two more times on each breast but from slightly different angles. Then this is repeated on the other breast. If you require an ultrasound for some reason (e.g maybe family history) that is done too. Same type of ultra sound as any other sort ….except on the breasts. Then you wait to see the doctor with your gown on in the television room ...there are only woman in this room and you are all wearing the same gown- no fashion show! Tea & coffee are even available. The doctor sees you...I have often seen a lady doctor. They press firmly on the breast to feel for any slight lumps or indentations etc & discuss any things happening of a girl nature & you can ask questions too. The doctor I have seen is great and very helpful. The doc checks your mammogram & ultra sound ....and off you go. Yep you should check your own breasts yourself too but you need to get this done. It has saved my mums life twice getting this done & she has made sure I get it done each year too! Ladies I hope this explanation helps if you have never had it done! Honestly I was scared the first time and put it off for years- I was lucky and stupid simultaneously. Once done seriously you will never stress about the tests again. Like Arnie who even looks like he has breasts (muscle ones anyway) JUST DDDDOOOOOO IT !
