Here is part of a commentary I found on blueletterbible.org about Matthew 5:5. Gentleness or meekness is the opposite to self-assertiveness and self-interest. It stems from trust in Gods goodness and control over the situation. The gentle person is not occupied with self at all. This is a work of the Holy Spirit, not of the human will (Gal 5:23). I was looking up the meaning of meek today, and it really means mild, gentle, and even submissive. All of that still goes along with seeking first to understand others, before trying to get them to understand yourself. All in all I was probably stretching the definition of meek a bit last night, but not completely incorrect about the big picture.
