Here is some information that I would like to pass on. As I have researched the library issue, I have talked to the library manager at the Barrhead public library several times. In our conversation yesterday, I asked her about the Barrheads funding.I thought that she would be able to give me a number but she said she needed to get her folder. Here is the information she gave me. The population of the town and county for the provincial grant is 10,147 and the provincial grant is $5.40 per person. This is $54,793.80. The town of Barrhead gives the library $16.30 per person and the population of Barrhead is 4432. This is $72, 241.60. The county has a population of 6096 and it gives the library $16.30 per person. This is $99,364.80. The school in Barrhead gives the library $52,430.00. The school can not charge the library rent but does charge it $14,900 a year for utilities, insurance, maintenance, security, etc. When I do the math it looks like this. $54,793.80 $72,241.60 $99,364.80 $52,430.00 ---------------- $278,830.20 Minus the $14,900 fee to the school. This means the Barrhead library has $263,930 to offer library services. I asked her again about her comment that you lose people. She said it was library patrons. Many people just dont like to go into schools. She did say that in her opinion an after school drop in center/home work area would be a good town asset to have in our school. In their school the library just couldnt handle all the kids who wanted to stay after school and they had to encourage them to go home. This is just a little more information as this discussion goes ahead.
